EMOTIONAL IMPACT: SCULPTING THE HUMAN HEAD

CHRISTINE GOLDEN

Saturday & Sunday
September 24 - 25
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

This workshop is designed to give students experience in rendering
the human head. Students will explore the various moods and attitudes conveyed by the face to enhance the individual character of their sculpture. Students will experiment with techniques to create expression in the human face, and will gain a foundation for making a realistic human head. Anatomical lessons and demonstrations of the nose, eyes, mouth, ears and hair will be provided.

Christine has been creating art for over 15 years, working predominantly with the human figure sculpted in clay. She earned her BFA from the University of Utah and MFA from Indiana University. She has participated in residencies and workshops at the Peter’s Valley Craft Center, Vermont Studio Center, Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Penland School of Crafts and Red Lodge Clay Center. She currently works and lives in Flagstaff, AZ.

Tuition: $200
Lab Fee: $35

ANIMAL MASQUERADE: POTTERY SAFARI

JOE BOVA

Saturday & Sunday
October 15 - 16
9:30 am - 4:30 pm

During this hands on workshop, participants will hunt for the animal
in the pot and the pot in the animal. The animal might be human,
wild, or your best friend. Both wheel, slab building and combined
techniques will be explored, as well as an adaptation of repousse technique and modeling. The importance of gesture, surface and detail to animating and evoking the spirit of the animal identity through
pottery form will be emphasized. Equally, so will the importance of
the functional integrity of the pot. While holding your favorite pot you might also hold a favorite animal. Think about the issues of simultaneity and duality. Demonstrations will be augmented by illustrated discussions of historical and contemporary references and influences.

Joe received his MFA from the University of New Mexico. He has taught at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and at Ohio University. Joe has served as Chairman of the Board of Penland, and as President
of NCECA. He is Program Chair for the International Academy of Ceramics 2012 conference in Santa Fe. His work is in many public and private collections including the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC and the Los Angeles County Museum. He currently makes his home in Santa Fe.

Tuition: $200
Lab Fee: $35
