Micaceous Firing


Micaceous clay has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples of the Southwest to create functional cookware. This class will focus on making mica clay pots using the traditional coilbuilding method, slipped surface treatment and smoke firing. Demonstrations and individual attention from the instructor will provide students of all levels a satisfying experience. The session will close with a traditional outdoor firing.
Firing is subject to burn permit approval.

 

 



GARDEN SCULPTURE

On the ground, against a wall or free-standing, a sculpture can provide a unique and interesting focal point in your garden. This class will focus on handbuilding with slabs. Surface treatments appropriate for outdoor sculpture, tricks for assembling components, as well as suggestions for installation will be addressed.

This class will explore surface design techniques for cone 10 reduction using Santa Fe Clay’s studio glazes, slips and oxides. The focus will be on integrating form and surface through the application of pattern and decoration. Techniques covered include incising, carving, wax and latex resists, stamping and sgraffito.
Handbuilding and/or wheel skills are recommended.

THROWING AND ALTERING

This is a 6 week class.

This class will focus on using the potter’s wheel as a tool for making parts that can then be combined to create unique, more complex functional forms. Cylinders thrown without bottoms, forms stretched out-of-round and other techniques will be demonstrated. Throwing experience necessary.

For centuries porcelain has been coveted for its purity and strength. It's unique properties call for a specific set of skills that are different from how most other clay bodies are handled. This class will focus on the development of that skill set which includes special techniques for throwing, trimming and drying.

This class is an introduction to the potter’s wheel. Demonstrations will cover the fundamental steps required to make simple pots such as cups and bowls on the wheel. Basic surface treatments and glazing are also covered.

This class covers the basics of the craft for beginners as well as those with throwing experience who want to improve their skills. Fundamentals of throwing, trimming and glazing techniques will be taught for a variety of functional forms. Demonstrations and technical information are provided with attention to individual needs, allowing students to pursue their own direction.

This class is for students who have basic throwing skills, but seek further instruction leading to a stronger command of the wheel and an expanded vocabulary of forms. Demonstrations are tailored to the needs of the students in the class.

This class will focus on making functional dishes using a var iety of handbuilding methods. Emphasis will be placed on integrating form, function and surface to make useful objects for your home.

The instructor will introduce basic hand forming techniques that can be geared toward either functional or sculptural ideas. Demonstrations cover pinch, coil, and slab methods of construction. Basic surface treatments and glazing are also covered.

This class focuses on development and refinement of a variety of hand forming clay skills. Basic construction techniques, surface treatments and glazing are covered. Demonstrations and individual attention from the instructor allow students to pursue their own direction.

This class is for students who have a range of handbuilding skills and seek further direction toward development of a personal style or a body of work. Demonstrations are tailored to the needs of the students in the class.


 

ALL ADULT CLASS TUITIONS ARE $240 PER SEVEN WEEK CLASS.
ADULT CLASSES ARE 3 HOURS EACH WEEK.

This includes 25 lbs of clay and unlimited access to the studio during regular studio hours.



REGISTRATION
Please call us at 505-984-1122 with any questions about a particular class or workshop before you sign up. Registration should be made as soon as possible; enrollment is limited and classes and workshops will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We require full tuition and lab fees at the time of registration. This payment reserves your space, and includes a $80 (Adult) or $35 (Children) non-refundable registration fee per class. You may register by mail, by phone, or in person. We accept personal checks (payable to Santa Fe Clay Co.), money orders, or Visa/Mastercard, Discover and American Express cards. Please read Class/Workshop Policy below and specific refund policies for workshops.

TUITION & FEES
Fees listed for each class are for instruction only. Participants should anticipate, unless otherwise noted, additional costs for clay, tools and firing fees. All students and studio members pay firing fees of 3.0¢ per cubic inch. This fee, per piece, covers bisque firing, use of all our shop glazes, and the cone 10 glaze firing.

We reserve the right to cancel, combine or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment. If a class is cancelled, students will be offered the option of another class or a full refund



CLASS/WORKSHOP REFUND POLICY

If a student drops a class up to seven days before the start of the session or two weeks before a short term workshop,
tuition will be refunded except for a non-refundable registration fee:
$80.00 fee for Adult 2-day Workshops
$55.00 fee for Saturday Workshop
$25.00 fee for Friday Afternoon Workshops
$35 fee for Children's Workshop

NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER THIS DATE.
Class prices will not be adjusted for missed classes.
Make-ups may be arranged in a similar class, during the same session, if space permits.

Fridays & Saturdays 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sundays 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm


PRIVATE LESSONS:
We are now offering private lessons for all ages.
$50/person/hour (+ tax); 2 hour minimum

Senior citizens (62 years and older) will receive a 10% discount on tuition for any seven week class.
