INTRODUCTION TO CLAY
Handbuilding & Throwing

Beginner's Class

Interested in clay but not sure how to start? Take this class to explore how to work & build with clay through handbuilding and wheel throwing. This is an opportunity to learn about ceramic history, the ancient roots of how humans have created vessels with clay and glaze, and find your own path with clay. The ABC’s of how to make vessels on and off the wheel will be covered. You can expect to finish the class with many vessels and the confidence to pursue further studies in clay. Please bring an old towel, apron, small notebook and a sense of adventure.

 

 

 





TILES, SLAB BUILDING
& DECORATION

In this class, students will learn various techniques for handbuilding with slabs, as well as how to decorate their work with underglazes and oxides. Slab projects will begin with tiles and simple slab forms, allowing students to concentrate on developing decorating techniques while learning how to make quality slabs. Demonstrations will advance over the seven weeks to more complex forms such as cups and covered jars.

Utilizing templates and molds, students will learn to make sets of functional pots. Demonstrations will include ideas such as nesting bowls, matching cups, and trays. Students will be encouraged to create self-directed projects that investigate their own unique interests.

MIKE JABBUR





This class offers an in-depth study of covered jars and other lidded forms. Students will be exposed to the basic styles of lids: inset, cap, and overhanging, and will learn to make a well fitting lid that relates to the rest of the pottery form. Specific issues such as size, weight, and form will be discussed to help students make smart decisions concerning the functional aspects of pots with lids.

Expand your skills with new decorating techniques. This course will cover a variety of surface finishes to enhance your work. Both high fire and low fire will be utilized. We will explore terra sigillata, engobes, commercial underglazes, patinas and gain a deeper understanding of glazes. The studio glazes will provide a starting point for glaze application and combinations. Glaze mixing, and lectures on chemistry and materials will round out the course.

Our handbuilding and sculpture classes focus on developing and refining clay forming skills and exploring form and surface for both functional and sculptural work. Basic construction techniques such as coil, slab, and assemblage will be covered, along with surface treatment, texture and glazing. This class is structured for all levels of experience and will combine group demonstrations with individual attention from the instructor.

Wheel throwing classes concentrate on the basics of the craft for beginners as well as those with throwing experience who want to improve their skills. Fundamentals of throwing, trimming and glazing techniques will be taught for many functional forms including bowls, plates, mugs and pitchers. Demonstrations and technical information are provided with attention to individual needs. This class allows students to work within its structure at all levels of experience.

   
   
 

ALL ADULT CLASS TUITIONS ARE $230 PER SEVEN WEEK CLASS.
CLASSES ARE 3 HOURS EACH WEEK.
This includes 25 lbs of clay and unlimited access to the studio during regular studio hours.
Firing fees are not included.

REGULAR STUDIO HOURS:
Mondays - Thursdays 9:00 am - 9:00 pm
Fridays & Saturdays 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sundays 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm



CLASS/WORKSHOP REFUND POLICY
If a student drops a class up to seven days before the start of the session or two weeks before a short term workshop, tuition will be refunded except for a $75.00 (or $30 for Children’s Workshops) non-refundable registration fee. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER THIS DATE. No refunds will be given for missed classes. Make-ups may be arranged in a similar class, during the same session, if space permits.




 

SENIOR DISCOUNTS
Senior citizens (62 years and older) will receive a 10% discount on tuition for any seven week class.

TAKE 2 (or more) CLASSES IN SAME SESSION
and
receive a 10% discount on both tuitions.
