Bling

On its surface, the term "BLING" describes the gold, silver and gemstones that bedazzle contemporary celebrities, specifically those in the music industry. However, the term originates from the commercial sound effect that accompanies the flash, shine, glitz and sparkle that is the result of toothpaste and other "new and improved" cleansig products offered up daily for our consumption. The popularization and proliferation of the term has become synonymous with ostentation, pretension and swagger. The derogatory implications of the term are not vague nor are they subtle.

The irreverence of the hip-hop celebrity lifestyle bacame fashionable as a repudiation of mainstream celebrity and, simultaneously, society. It is no suprise the term and the ideals of "BLING" have proliferated. It's a story of the outsider, the underdog and the maverick and can find comparison in other cultural genres from fashion (Versace) to architecture (Gehry). One must only consider the French Rococo style and its response to stifling aristocratic court life to see the parallel throughout history. Rococo was about "pretty" instead of beauty, "novelty" flying in the face of tradition and, often, intolerably poor taste trumping staid social/political order.

It may be summer in Santa Fe, but come get "iced out" with us.

Sip, Slurp, Gulp

This summer, the gallery at Santa Fe Clay will host an exhibit of ceramic cups. With over 80 artists represented, "SIP, SLURP, GULP" promises to be a show not to miss.

In conjunction, and in contrast, with the smaller (but never diminutive) cups, Santa Fe Clay will also host "PORTALS AND GARDENS", a show featuring large-scale ceramic art perfect for displaying in your garden or under your portal.

FUSE

Paul Kotula
Howard Kottler
Melissa Mytty
James Shrosbree

The production of functional ceramic ware for everyday use is typically categorized as “craft” and rarely considered to be “high” or “fine” art. The perception of lowered originality in an artist’s collection is to blame, ironically, on the design and craftsmanship of functional work that comes as a result of years of repetition and perfection.

The mission and vision of the “Fuse” exhibition at Santa Fe Clay is to utilize the invaluable advantages that result from this refinement and merge those design strategies with the larger conceptual implications of the work itself.
Through the highly conceptual placement and setting of these perfected forms, we will coalesce years of design refinement at their apex within an environment that reconsiders and accurately represents their status as high art.

Through the fine curatorial eye of curator Paul Kotula, “FUSE” brings together the work of four artists whose strategic approaches to design ignite the misperceptions that too often distinguish and separate craft from art.
